Shillong,April 10 :Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has clarified that no permanent structures will be constructed on Lumpongdeng Island amid growing concerns over the proposed luxury tourism project at Umiam Lake.

The clarification comes as protests led by the Green-Tech Foundation (GTF) intensify against the planned development by Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), which operates the Taj brand.Addressing the issue, the Chief Minister said the agreement signed by the government and the Tourism Department clearly states that permanent construction will not be allowed on the island. He explained that only temporary structures such as tents, stalls or event setups may be permitted for specific occasions and would be removed afterwards, ensuring no lasting impact on the island’s ecosystem.

The statement follows concerns raised by GTF based on RTI replies, which suggested approvals for villas, cafes and restaurants. The group argued that such developments would involve permanent construction.Sangma also noted that while certain provisions under environmental laws may allow construction, the Tourism Department has taken a firm position against any permanent structures on the island.

The Chief Minister also urged the public to avoid misinformation and assured that environmental protection remains a priority.
