Shillong, April 13: Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has strongly criticised the Meghalaya government’s tourism policies, warning that the promotion of high-end projects could have serious social consequences.

In his remarks, Basaiawmoit expressed concern over the push for casino-linked and luxury tourism developments, stating that such initiatives risk turning Meghalaya into a “Sex State” if not carefully regulated. He said that economic growth should not come at the cost of the state’s moral values and social fabric, stressing that the people do not want development driven by activities that could negatively impact society.

The VPP leader also called for greater accountability from the government, urging authorities to prioritise environmental protection and the interests of local communities over commercial expansion.

Basaiawmoit’s remarks come amid growing public opposition to the proposed tourism project at Umiam Lake, where H Bansiewdor Nonglang, chairman of the Green-Tech Foundation, continues his indefinite hunger strike for the fourth consecutive day, drawing support from various groups and citizens.
