Shillong, April 13: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has defended the proposed tourism project at Lumpongdeng Island in Umiam, stating that the initiative is focused on conservation and sustainable development rather than environmental damage.
Addressing concerns over the project, Tynsong said the plan aims to preserve wetlands, water bodies and the natural ecosystem, while improving the area’s overall appeal. He added that the development would follow a model similar to Ward’s Lake in Shillong — a well-maintained and eco-friendly public space.

The Deputy Chief Minister also highlighted that the project will include tourism infrastructure such as hospitality facilities, which are expected to boost tourism and generate economic activity in the region.
Meanwhile, opposition to the project continues to grow.H Bansiewdor Nonglang is currently on an indefinite hunger strike, which has now entered its fifth day, demanding that the project be halted. Several groups have also raised concerns over possible environmental impact and land-related issues linked to the development.Critics argue that despite the government’s assurances, the project could affect the fragile ecosystem of the Umiam area.Responding to the protests, Tynsong maintained that the government is committed to “greener development” and is working in the public interest to ensure long-term and sustainable growth.
The situation remains tense as the hunger strike continues, with calls for dialogue between the government and protestors growing louder.
