The National People’s Party (NPP) has ruled out the possibility of any pre-poll alliance for the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, even as it continues deliberations on its candidate.

Speaking to reporters, state working president and cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak said the party will stick to its independent political approach.“We don’t have a pre-poll alliance in Meghalaya,” he stated. The by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting MP Ricky AJ Syngkon in February. The Voice of the People Party (VPP) had secured a landslide victory in the 2024 general elections, while NPP candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh finished third. The BJP had supported the NPP candidate during that election.

On the Rajya Sabha seat, Marak said a decision will be taken soon, as the term of Wanweiroy Kharlukhi ends in June. With a strong majority in the Assembly, the NPP is expected to comfortably secure the seat.Commenting on the party’s performance in Assam, Marak said initial feedback from the ground has been encouraging, expressing hope that the party will be able to open its account in the state.
