Shillong, April 10 : South Shillong MLA and cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai has said he is ready to contest the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election if directed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership.
Calling himself a disciplined party worker, Shullai stated that he would abide by any decision taken by the state or central leadership regarding his candidature. He noted that while the party’s central leadership has already given the green signal to contest the by-poll, the formal process of selecting candidates has not yet begun.Shullai had earlier contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election, where he finished third with less than 10 percent of the vote, securing around 76,000 votes.
The BJP did not field a candidate in the 2024 general elections and instead backed its ally, the National People’s Party (NPP).Looking back at his previous campaign, Shullai said he had only three weeks to campaign in 2019 and expressed hope that this time the party’s candidate would get enough time to connect with voters. The Shillong Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after the death of Voice of the People Party (VPP) MP Ricky AJ Syngkon in February. The Election Commission is yet to announce the by-election date.
