Meghalaya Govt to Proceed with Umiam Tourism Project: Tynsong

Shillong 15, April: The state government has reiterated its commitment to proceed with the proposed luxury tourism project at Umiam Lake, including the use of Lumpongdeng Island, despite growing opposition from civil society groups and political parties.

The Green-Tech Foundation (GTF) has been leading protests against the project, which involves the development of a five-star resort by Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), operators of the Taj brand, at the existing Orchid Lake Resort site. Several pressure groups and opposition parties have extended support to the movement.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong maintained that the government will move forward with the project, while reaffirming that no permanent structures will be constructed on Lumpongdeng Island — a claim contested by GTF.“The government’s doors are always open for discussions with any aggrieved individuals,” Tynsong said, adding that the project is expected to generate employment opportunities for the youth of the state.

He also criticised claims made by the Voice of the People Party (VPP) regarding potential misuse of facilities, stating that such concerns are unfounded and that the public will make its own judgement. Also, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma clarified that the resort will be developed only on the existing premises of the Orchid Lake Resort, while Lumpongdeng Island will be used strictly for special events with temporary structures. He assured that the island’s natural ecosystem will be preserved.
