GTF Demands Written Talks with Govt to Scrap Lumpongdeng Resort Project

Shillong, April,15 : The Green-Tech Foundation (GTF) Meghalaya on Wednesday said it is open to dialogue with the state government over the proposed luxury tourism project at Lumpongdeng Island, but made it clear that any engagement must be formally communicated in writing and centred on scrapping the project.

Speaking to reporters, GTF general secretary Ritre Lyngdoh stated that the organisation is willing to meet government representatives, provided an official written invitation is issued clearly outlining the agenda. He stressed that the foundation expects transparency and seriousness from the authorities, adding that the primary focus of any discussion must be the withdrawal of the proposed resort project.

From our side, we are ready to meet anyone from the government if there is genuine dialogue. However, since we have pursued this issue through formal written communication, we expect the same approach from the authorities,” Lyngdoh said.

According to him, the district administration earlier deputed a magistrate to engage with the foundation and facilitate a possible meeting with the Director of Tourism, who has expressed willingness to hold discussions.

However, GTF maintained that informal communication will not be sufficient and reiterated the need for a structured and officially documented dialogue process.

The development comes amid ongoing protests against the proposed project, which has drawn criticism from environmental groups and sections of the public concerned about the ecological impact on Lumpongdeng Island and the surrounding Umiam Lake area.

Meanwhile, Lyngdoh informed that the foundation’s chairman, H Bansharai Nonglang, has entered the seventh day of his indefinite hunger strike at Malki Ground, intensifying pressure on the government to reconsider the project.

The foundation has been consistently opposing the proposed luxury resort, citing concerns over environmental sustainability and the long-term impact on the region’s fragile ecosystem.
