Shillong, Apr 15: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday held a meeting with the Arts and Culture Department along with research groups to review a major project focused on the historical, cultural, linguistic, and migratory origins of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo tribes of Meghalaya.
The project aims to conduct in-depth research to trace the ancestry and origins of the state’s tribal communities.
As part of the project, the government has constituted two separate committees — one focusing on the Khasi-Jaintia community and the other on the Garo tribe — to ensure a more detailed and specialised approach.

The study will also involve DNA mapping, along with in-depth research on linguistic and cultural linkages. Researchers will work collaboratively to document various aspects of the tribes’ origins, migration patterns, and historical evolution.
Officials informed that extensive studies are underway as part of the initiative.Sangma described the meeting as productive and expressed support for the project, stating that understanding the roots and identity of the indigenous communities is important for the state.
The Chief Minister also conveyed his best wishes to the research teams and said he looks forward to the outcomes of the project.
