GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced an ambitious plan to place Assam among the top 10 states in India for tourist arrivals, unveiling a series of tourism-focused initiatives in the 2026-27 State Budget.

Speaking after Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah presented the Budget in the Assembly, Sarma said Assam’s tourism sector has recorded strong growth in recent years and the government is determined to build on that momentum through fresh investments and policy support.

“Assam’s tourism sector is growing by leaps and bounds with the support of national and international patrons who are choosing Awesome Assam as their favourite destination. We are committed to further boost this sector,” the Chief Minister said.

The government has also announced a new Homestay Policy under which eligible beneficiaries will receive a 30 per cent capital subsidy and 2 per cent interest subvention to establish homestays. Sarma said the scheme is expected to create jobs in rural and semi-urban areas while giving visitors a chance to experience Assam’s local culture and traditions. The Budget also proposes the construction of five-star hotels in Umrangso, Haflong and Manas to strengthen tourism infrastructure and attract more domestic and international travellers.

According to the Chief Minister, the government aims to develop world-class tourism facilities while protecting Assam’s rich cultural heritage, wildlife and natural attractions. He said the tourism sector will continue to play a key role in boosting the state’s economy and creating employment opportunities.
