Selsella NGOs ask Meghalaya to double D.El.Ed seats at DIET Tura

SHILLONG : The All Selsella NGOs’ Alliance has asked the Meghalaya government to increase the D.El.Ed intake at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Tura, from the present 50 seats to at least 100.

The alliance said the institute caters to eligible candidates from both West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills, making the existing intake insufficient for the number of students seeking admission.

In a representation submitted to the Director of the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT) on Wednesday, alliance chairman H.N. Sangma and general secretary Changle T. Sangma also raised concerns over the distribution of seats among different C&RD blocks.

The representation points to the 2026 D.El.Ed admission list, saying only one candidate was selected from the Batabari and Demdema C&RD Block, while Selsella had two selections. Dadenggre and Tikrikilla C&RD blocks also had two candidates each.

The alliance said the number of selected candidates from Rongram and Gambegre C&RD blocks was significantly higher.

It has asked the department to distribute seats more evenly among the C&RD blocks, while continuing to follow eligibility and merit requirements.

The group said a number of qualified young people from each block are seeking teacher training and should have a fair opportunity to compete for seats at DIET Tura.

The alliance has requested that the intake be raised to 100 seats or more from the next admission session. It has also sought a block-wise admission system to ensure a more balanced distribution of seats.

The alliance said the proposed changes would give candidates from different C&RD blocks a more equal opportunity to pursue D.El.Ed training and later serve as teachers in their respective areas.
