Metbah Lyngdoh leads Northeast push for ₹3,212 crore power infrastructure funding

SHILLONG : Meghalaya Power Minister and North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) chairman Metbah Lyngdoh has taken up a regional proposal seeking Central funding for 45 power infrastructure projects worth a combined ₹3,212 crore.

Lyngdoh has forwarded a resolution adopted by the NERPC to Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, seeking a dedicated funding mechanism for priority power projects across the Northeast. The proposal covers 43 state-specific projects estimated at ₹2,903.50 crore, along with two projects intended for the region as a whole, costing ₹308.58 crore.

Meghalaya has proposed nine projects worth ₹425.41 crore, with the package aimed at improving the reliability and resilience of the state’s electricity network. The two regional projects include ₹206.58 crore in Central assistance for SCADA/EMS ULDC Phase-III, whose total estimated cost is ₹688.61 crore, and an Emergency Restoration System (ERS) project costing ₹102 crore for the Northeastern states except Assam.

The NERPC has said the proposed investments are intended to address transmission bottlenecks, improve grid reliability and strengthen both physical and cyber security of power infrastructure.

The projects are also expected to support safer operation and maintenance of electricity networks and improve the region’s ability to provide reliable power supply around the clock.

The proposal comes after 35 projects worth ₹917.52 crore were previously sanctioned under the Power System Development Fund (PSDF). The states are now seeking a separate Central mechanism to finance other priority works that remain pending.

Lyngdoh first became NERPC chairman in September 2025 and was re-elected for another term beginning April 1, 2026.

The regional push places Meghalaya among the states seeking substantial investment to address longstanding infrastructure constraints in the Northeast’s power sector.
