SHILLONG — Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has dismissed speculation about a possible political realignment involving the UDP and BJP, saying he has seen no concrete information beyond social media posts, reels and reports.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Sangma said he could not comment on a possible merger or political arrangement based on material circulating online.
“This is something to do with two parties separately – BJP and whatever I’m hearing about UDP. It is something that I have not heard of from any reliable source,” he said.
Sangma said his own exposure to the speculation had largely come through social media.
“I have only been seeing reels and some social media messages and news, but beyond that, I have not seen anything concrete,” he said.
He also rejected the idea of drawing political conclusions from fragments circulating online, saying decisions and public statements should be based on facts.
“I cannot make a decision or make comments based only on news articles and messages or reels that are coming in. It has to be based on facts,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister then turned to the numbers inside the ruling coalition, saying the NPP remains united and has 33 MLAs.
“NPP is absolutely united. The Deputy Chief Minister has given a very clear picture that we are working together and our number is 33. We are very much united,” he said.
Sangma said there was no reason to be concerned about the stability of the government and pointed to the administration’s focus on upcoming district council elections and the Lok Sabha by-election.
“There is no such move or any kind of agenda that anybody should be worried about. The party is working solidly and unitedly as a very strong team,” he said.
