JOWAI — Kiang Nangbah Government College’s 60th Foundation Day in Jowai came with a push for the institution to seek greater academic freedom and upgrade its infrastructure, including a new auditorium for around 3,000 students.
Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Education Department V.K. Mantri, who attended the programme as chief guest on Tuesday, urged the college to work towards autonomous status, saying this would give it greater flexibility in curriculum development, examinations and academic planning.
“The college should aspire for greater academic freedom and work towards achieving autonomous status,” Mantri said. He said autonomy would allow the college to respond more effectively to changing student needs and the requirements of the world of work.
The demand for better infrastructure was also placed firmly on the table. Mantri highlighted the need for a proper auditorium with seating for about 3,000 students and assured that the college’s infrastructure requirements would be taken up with the government. He also referred to the consensus among students, faculty and the college administration on fee revision and suggested creating a College Development Fund.
The proposed fund could be used for infrastructure improvements and other development work.
Mantri also spoke about the changing nature of education and employment as artificial intelligence takes on more analytical and technical tasks. He urged students to focus on creativity, innovation and original thinking rather than simply keeping pace with technology.
“Creativity and original thinking will remain important strengths for young people as AI changes the nature of work,” he told the students. He also welcomed students from outside Meghalaya, saying their presence would bring wider exposure to the campus and contribute to a more vibrant college environment. Students were encouraged to look beyond the region and use their knowledge and skills in different fields.
Principal H. Toi highlighted the college’s contribution over six decades and outlined its present requirements. Faculty and staff who completed 25 years of service were also honoured with Silver Jubilee Awards, while meritorious rank holders received awards for their academic performance.
