SHILLONG — The Hynniewtrep Youth Council has asked NEIGRIHMS to fill its vacant Nursing Officer posts without further delay, while seeking an 80:20 female-to-male recruitment ratio for the positions.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem submitted a representation to the NEIGRIHMS Director on Friday, asking the institute to prepare a time-bound plan for filling the vacancies. The Council said the proposed ratio was aimed at ensuring enough female nursing staff for departments where privacy and gender-sensitive care are particularly important.
Synrem said the demand was not meant to shut out male nursing officers, but to maintain adequate female staff in obstetrics, gynaecology, maternity, paediatrics and neonatal care. The Council argued that patients in such departments often require care where gender considerations are more sensitive.
HYC referred to a March 2026 Bombay High Court judgment and recruitment practices followed by institutions including AIIMS and JIPMER while making its case for the 80:20 arrangement.
The Council has also asked NEIGRIHMS to respond in writing, saying the nursing shortage needs urgent attention given the hospital’s role in providing specialised treatment to patients from Meghalaya and across the Northeast.
