Shillong, Apr 15: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laban Circle on Tuesday sealed a structure at Lower Lumparing, alleging that it was being used as an unauthorised masjid without approval from the local Dorbar Shnong.
Acting on complaints from local residents, members of the union visited the site and claimed that the premises had been converted into a place of worship named “Lumparing Masjid” without obtaining necessary permissions from the Dorbar Shnong or other authorities.
According to the KSU, the land was originally meant to serve as caretaker quarters for a person responsible for maintaining a nearby Muslim graveyard. But, the structure was allegedly later used for religious activities.
The Dorbar Shnong Lower Lumparing had earlier inspected the site and reportedly directed that the signboard carrying the name “Lumparing Masjid” be removed. The KSU claimed that this directive was not followed.
KSU Laban Circle general secretary Shiningstar Chyne said the organisation conducted its own inspection and confirmed that the site was being used for religious purposes.
He also raised concerns over sanitation, alleging that waste from the premises was being discharged into surrounding areas.Chyne further claimed that an imam had been residing at the location for around six months without proper documentation, including a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or police verification.
