Former TMC leader Sujit Bose held by ED Over alleged Municipal recruitment scam

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday arrested former West Bengal minister and senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sujit Bose in connection with the alleged municipality recruitment scam, a case that has already triggered major political controversy in the state.

Investigators claim the scam involved illegal appointments in municipal bodies in exchange for money.

Kolkata, May 12 : Former West Bengal minister Sujit Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Monday after several hours of questioning in connection with the alleged municipality recruitment scam.

According to the agency, Bose is accused of helping several people secure jobs in municipal bodies through illegal recommendations and financial dealings.

Officials claimed that around 150 appointments linked to the South Dum Dum Municipality are currently under scrutiny as part of the investigation.

The ED also alleged that money earned through the recruitment scam was used to purchase flats and other properties. Investigators reportedly found suspicious financial transactions and large cash deposits in bank accounts connected to the case.

The arrest was made under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), and Bose is expected to be produced before a special court for further proceedings.

The case is linked to alleged irregularities in municipal recruitment across West Bengal, including appointments for different civic posts such as clerks, labourers, drivers and sanitation workers.Investigating agencies suspect that jobs were offered in exchange for money through an organised network involving political influence and illegal recommendations.

The recruitment scam has remained politically sensitive in West Bengal, with several leaders and former officials already facing investigation in related cases over the past few years.

The latest arrest has drawn additional attention because it comes soon after the formation of the new BJP-led government in the state.

While opposition parties have previously accused central agencies of targeting political rivals, the ED maintains that its investigation is based on financial evidence and official records related to the recruitment process.
