An Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) successfully assisted a safe home delivery in the remote village of Saibual under Saipung Primary Health Centre (PHC), highlighting the important role frontline health workers continue to play in difficult and hard-to-reach areas.

Health officials said the ANM responded promptly and ensured both the mother and newborn received safe care despite the challenges of reaching the village.Saibual is located in a remote area under East Jaintia Hills, where access to healthcare services often becomes difficult due to terrain and distance.

Officials said the successful delivery reflects the commitment of health workers who continue serving communities in remote parts of the state.

“Such efforts show that healthcare services are reaching the last mile and that no family is being left behind,” a health official said. The Saipung PHC team was also appreciated for its continued work in improving healthcare access and strengthening maternal health services in rural areas.

Officials noted that ANMs remain one of the most important links between rural communities and the healthcare system, particularly in villages where medical facilities are not easily accessible.

At the same time, health authorities stressed that institutional deliveries under trained medical supervision remain the safest option for both mothers and newborns.

“While this delivery was safely handled, pregnant women are still encouraged to opt for institutional deliveries wherever possible to reduce risks and ensure proper medical support,” officials stated.

The incident has drawn appreciation locally, with many acknowledging the dedication of frontline health workers who continue serving in challenging conditions across Meghalaya.
