Meghalaya targets 200 new Doctors, pushes Healthcare reforms

The Meghalaya government says upcoming medical colleges and new reforms are expected to help address the shortage of doctors and improve healthcare services across the state.

Shillong, May 07 : Meghalaya Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla on Wednesday said the state expects to produce around 200 doctors within the next five years as part of efforts to strengthen the healthcare sector.

Speaking at a medical conference, Shylla said the target is expected to be achieved through the upcoming medical colleges in Shillong and Tura, which are expected to expand opportunities for medical education in the state. He said the government is also introducing reforms aimed at improving the functioning of hospitals and healthcare institutions across Meghalaya.

According to the minister, the reforms include localised budgeting for hospitals, faster recruitment processes and timely promotions for healthcare staff. Shylla said the government is focusing on improving healthcare delivery while addressing the shortage of doctors and medical professionals in different parts of the state.

The minister also stressed the importance of strengthening the public healthcare system to ensure better medical services for citizens across urban and rural areas.

The government has maintained that healthcare infrastructure and manpower development remain among its major priorities in the coming years.

The Minister also said ongoing investments in medical education and hospital reforms are aimed at improving healthcare services across the state.
