SHILLONG : The Centrepoint Group on Thursday condemned an alleged assault that took place earlier in the day at its resort construction site in Laitkynsew village, claiming that several workers were injured after a group of youths entered the area and attacked labourers present there.
In a statement issued by Centrepoint Group Enterprise Managing Director Larsing Sawyan, the company alleged that around 15 youths claiming to be members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) entered the project site at around 2:45 PM and allegedly threatened and assaulted workers present at the location.
The company claimed that multiple workers sustained injuries during the incident, while one mason identified as Rajkumar Sharma reportedly suffered serious head injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
“We are deeply concerned over this act of violence and lawlessness,” the company stated.
Centrepoint Group said the incident was not only an attack on a business establishment but also a threat to the safety, dignity and rights of workers.
“We view this assault not just as an attack on a business, but as a violation of the fundamental rights of a citizen of India the right to live in safety, employment, dignity and protection under the law,” the statement said.
The hospitality group further expressed concern over the broader impact such incidents could have on investment, tourism and infrastructure development in Meghalaya.

According to the company, violence targeting local enterprises discourages investment, creates fear among workers and affects employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas where development and job creation remain limited.
The group stated that it currently employs more than 680 salaried workers and continues to invest in tourism and infrastructure projects across the state.
It further claimed that attacks on local business enterprises developing projects in rural areas ultimately affect Meghalaya’s economic progress and long-term development aspirations.
“This incident severely tarnishes the image and future of Meghalaya. Such acts deter investments, instill fear among workers, and deprive the state of opportunities, especially in rural areas that require development and employment generation,” the statement added.
The company appealed to the government to take immediate and stringent action against those allegedly involved and ensure the safety of workers and project sites across the state.
The statement also urged citizens to collectively condemn violence and support peaceful development efforts in Meghalaya.
