GUWAHATI : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has given a five-year assurance on government recruitment, saying his government will not allow corruption to enter the process as the state prepares to fill a large number of posts.
Sarma made the statement on August 6 while speaking about government jobs in Assam. He said recruitment is currently free of corruption and that the same standard would be maintained during the next five years.
The statement comes against the backdrop of the Assam Government’s plan to provide two lakh government jobs over the next five years.
The target follows a large recruitment exercise during the previous tenure. The government has said more than 1.64 lakh appointments were made through the Assam Direct Recruitment Examination and recruitment conducted by individual departments.
A new recruitment plan is now being prepared for the next five years. The government has formed a task force headed by the Chief Secretary to assess available posts and work out the recruitment schedule.
The exercise includes identifying vacancies across government departments, autonomous bodies, colleges, universities and other government institutions. Officials are also assessing posts that will become vacant as employees retire.
The recruitment plan is expected to cover different categories of government employment rather than being limited to a single examination. Police, education, healthcare, revenue and forest departments are among the areas where manpower requirements are being assessed.
The government has also said its employment planning will cover institutions such as universities, medical colleges, statutory bodies, societies, Sixth Schedule Councils and government-linked organisations.
Sarma has previously linked government recruitment with merit and transparency. During the earlier recruitment drive, his government repeatedly highlighted appointments made without payment of bribes.
In December 2025, the Chief Minister said 5,815 appointment letters were being distributed and that the total number of appointments made since 2021 had crossed 1.41 lakh at that stage.
The state also has a dedicated Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, which handles complaints against public servants and investigates alleged corruption cases.
According to figures cited by Sarma in January this year, Assam recorded 29 anti-corruption trap operations in 2025, with 32 public servants arrested in those operations.
He also said the registered cases had been charge-sheeted.
