AIZAWL : Mizoram’s tourist numbers have transformed almost beyond recognition. In 2005-06 the state recorded just 46,312 arrivals. By 2025 that figure had climbed to 8,41,322 nearly eighteen times higher.

Growth stayed modest for years. Arrivals hovered between 64,000 and 70,000 through much of the 2010s. Only in 2018-19 did they approach 90,000. Then came the first real surge: 1,61,677 visitors in 2019-20, almost all of them domestic.

The pandemic erased those gains overnight. In 2020-21 the number collapsed to 20,564. Recovery followed quickly 1.32 lakh in 2021-22, 2.22 lakh the year after but the real explosion arrived later.

In 2024 Mizoram welcomed 4.27 lakh tourists. The next year the total nearly doubled to 8.41 lakh. Domestic travellers drove most of the increase, though foreign arrivals also rose from 5,414 to 11,484.

Over those two years alone the state received 12.68 lakh visitors. The 2025 figure was more than five times the pre-pandemic peak of 2019-20.

Better connectivity helps explain the jump. The Bairabi-Sairang railway line, opened in September 2025, linked Aizawl to the national network for the first time. Monthly arrivals tell the story clearly: 30,507 tourists in September 2024, 95,885 in the same month a year later.

The government has poured resources into infrastructure as well ₹610.78 crore in central assistance, 14 tourism projects under way, and nearly 200 new homestays.
