SHILLONG : The BJP has identified 25 to 30 “very potential” Assembly seats across Meghalaya for the 2028 election, party MLA Alexander Laloo Hek said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Hek said the party has assessed constituencies across Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills, with a wider list covering around 30 to 35 seats.

“We have already identified the potential seats… 25 to 30 seats is very potential for BJP for upcoming 2028 election,” Hek said, adding that the final prospects would also depend on the candidates fielded.

Hek, who represents Pynthorumkhrah, said the BJP is working from the booth level upwards and claimed the party is preparing to form the next government in Meghalaya. He also repeated the BJP’s open-door approach towards leaders from other political parties.

“The door is very wide… it’s open 24 hours… 365 days,” he said. Hek specifically mentioned leaders from the UDP, TMC, NPP, Congress, HSPDP and VPP, saying the BJP would welcome those willing to join the party.

His comments come amid continuing political speculation in Meghalaya over possible movement of legislators between parties ahead of the 2028 election.

On the chief ministerial question, Hek said the BJP had no fixed difficulty over who could lead a future government. He said the party would look for a leader capable of bringing different groups together, while the final decision would rest with the central leadership. “This is no question of toppling the government,” Hek said, adding that the BJP was prepared to work with any political party willing to work with it.

Hek also addressed the recent KSU agitation, saying he considered employment and development concerns raised by the student organisation genuine. However, he criticised the vandalism of statues of national figures, including Subhas Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda.

“We can fight for your issues, but the approach has to be a right-thinking approach,” he said.
