UDP’s Lahkmen Rymbui calls BJP talks a ‘probability and possibility’

SHILLONG : UDP MLA Lahkmen Rymbui has refused to shut the door on possible political changes amid reports that some party legislators are in talks to join the BJP, saying that “no door is closed” in politics.

Speaking to reporters, Rymbui did not confirm that any UDP MLA was preparing to join the BJP. He repeatedly described politics as a matter of “probability and possibility” and said legislators must remain conscious of developments around them.“

In politics, no door is closed,” Rymbui said. Politicians, he added, have to watch developments and take decisions at the appropriate time.

Asked about reports of UDP MLAs joining the BJP, he rejected the idea that the matter should be treated as simple speculation.

“It is not a game of speculation,” he said. “It is a probability and a possibility.”

Rymbui stopped short of spelling out his own political plans. The question, he said, was not about joining a particular party but about being conscious of what was happening around him and taking a decision at the appropriate time. Such decisions, he added, must take into account the responsibilities of legislators and “the aspirations of the people.”

On whether the UDP remains united, Rymbui said legislators were united on issues that needed to be raised at the appropriate forum for the betterment of Meghalaya. He could not, however, speak for legislators acting in their individual capacity.

“If you say there are legislators acting in their individual capacity, I cannot reply for their action or inaction,” he said.

The UDP had not discussed any leadership issue, he added, though individual legislators could have their own concerns outside the party’s formal discussions.
