
SHILLONG — Two men are in judicial custody after a scooter allegedly rammed into Additional SP (Traffic) Lovish Garg during a late-night naka check in Shillong. Both were later found drunk, police said.
The incident took place around 1:30 am on Friday at Urkaliar, near Samkhamti Petrol Pump. Traffic police, the local station team and the SOTS were running a joint naka scheduled from 11 pm to 2 am.
According to SP (Traffic) Dr Hari Prasanth M.R., IPS, the two men on the scooter tried to push past the checkpoint after being signalled to stop. Garg stepped in to block their escape. Police said the rider accelerated and struck him.
Garg sustained two lacerated wounds on his leg along with injuries to his head and lips. He was taken to hospital, received stitches and remains under observation.
The men were arrested and the scooter seized. Police have charged them with attempt to murder, disobeying the order of a public servant and causing grievous injury to a public servant. A court has remanded them to 14 days’ judicial custody.
Dr Prasanth told reporters the medical examination showed both men were drunk and that this “might be one of the reasons” for their conduct. The investigation is continuing. When asked whether the accused were linked to the KSU. The SP said interrogation was still under way and described them only as “suspected cases.” Police have not presented any organisational affiliation as established fact.
Families of the two men have claimed they were falsely accused. Prasanth rejected the claim, saying police had “material evidence” and that the charges rested on what the investigation had already collected.
In the aftermath, police have briefed personnel on a tighter response when vehicles try to flee naka checks. If a vehicle escapes one point, word is to be passed at once to the next junction so officers there can intercept it.
An on-duty senior officer is injured. Two men are in custody. An attempt-to-murder case is before the courts. The investigation will decide what happened behind the wheel and whether any organisational link can be proved.
