SHILLONG — The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has questioned the basis for police suspicion that the two men involved in the early Friday incident at Urkaliar are members of the organisation.
The KSU Central Executive Council issued the statement after a scooter carrying two men allegedly struck Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Lovish Garg, during naka checking near Samkhamti Petrol Pump.
The organisation said it was concerned that anyone was injured, including a police officer on duty, but objected to what it called an unverified attempt to associate the riders with KSU.
The KSU said police reports had described the men as suspected KSU members, and asked what information had formed the basis of that suspicion.
“Is it based on verified information or merely assumption?” the organisation asked, rejecting what it said as baseless allegations.
The statement also took a more pointed line, questioning whether riding a scooter in Shillong had somehow become enough to associate someone with the KSU. The organisation said it could not accept allegations against its name without verification and sought clarity on how the identities and KSU affiliation of the two riders were established.
The police have registered a case of attempt to murder in connection with the incident. The circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt to evade the naka checking, the identity of those involved and their suspected association with KSU remain matters for investigation.
