Scientists reconstruct face of 315,000-year-old Homo sapiens from Moroccan fossil

Facial reconstruction: Cicero Moraes et al., Heritage/MDPI (2026)

A face vanished for 315,000 years just got its shape back. Researchers led by Brazilian facial approximation specialist Cicero Moraes have digitally reconstructed a human face from fossils found at Jebel Irhoud, Morocco, the site holding some of the oldest known Homo sapiens remains on Earth.

The findings, published in the journal Heritage, offer the closest thing science has to a portrait of one of humanity’s earliest known populations.

No single skull was complete enough to work with alone. The main framework came from Irhoud 1, but researchers pulled jaw and dental material from other fossils found in the same archaeological layer to build one composite skull sturdy enough to reconstruct.

Using three-dimensional modelling and anatomical deformation techniques, the team adapted a modern human reference model onto that ancient bone structure, producing a grayscale anatomical reconstruction first. A second, coloured version followed, adding skin tone, hair and facial hair to give the face visual presence.

Skeletal structure reveals genuine anatomical fact, bone shape, jaw proportion, facial architecture. It says nothing about what colour that person’s skin was, what their hair looked like, or whether they wore a beard. Everything in the coloured version beyond the underlying bone structure is informed artistic interpretation, not recovered biological evidence, and the researchers are upfront about that line.

Jebel Irhoud has already rewritten textbooks once. When scientists redated the site’s remains and associated stone tools in 2017, the fossils came back at roughly 315,000 years old, pushing the known origin of Homo sapiens back further than almost anyone expected and making Irhoud the oldest confirmed Homo sapiens site on record.

This reconstruction isn’t a photograph. It’s a carefully built approximation, drawn from the oldest hard evidence our species has left behind, and it shows something worth sitting with: a recognisably human face was already looking back at Africa’s landscape 315,000 years ago, long before anyone was around to write any of it down.
