BUENOS AIRES — Lionel Andress Messi is set to receive one of Argentina’s biggest academic honours just days before his farewell appearance for the national team.
The University of Buenos Aires has named Messi a Doctor Honoris Causa, its highest honorary distinction, with the ceremony scheduled for October 6. The honour was approved unanimously by the university’s Superior Council.
UBA said the recognition reflects Messi’s sporting career, perseverance, humility, ethical conduct and his representation of Argentina over the years.
The university also pointed to the major international titles won by Argentina during Messi’s time as captain, including the 2021 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima, 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 Copa América. UBA also noted Argentina’s 2026 World Cup runner-up finish.
The ceremony will take place shortly before Messi’s scheduled farewell match for Argentina at the Monumental Stadium.
Messi, born in Rosario, built most of his club career in Spain but became one of the central sporting figures in Argentina’s modern football history.
UBA rector Ricardo Gelpi said the university wanted to recognise not only Messi’s numbers and sporting achievements but also the humility and perseverance it associates with him.
