Assam Police have arrested two people in Guwahati for allegedly sharing sensitive information about Indian Army movements with a Pakistan-based intelligence operative, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
One of those arrested is a retired Army jawan who was later working with the force on contract. His identity and present place of work have not been made public.
The other accused, identified as Abhishek Kumar Singh, 31, from Bihar’s East Champaran district, was picked up from his rented accommodation in Guwahati during the intervening night of October 3 and 4.
Police said the arrest followed an intelligence input from Gajraj Corps Military Intelligence in Tezpur. The Assam Police Special Task Force then worked with Sonitpur Police before moving against Singh. A mobile phone, SIM cards and documents were recovered from his accommodation, police said. The case has been registered as STF Police Station Case No. 09/2026.
Sarma said the two men were suspected of providing information about Army movements to Pakistan-linked operatives. “They were sharing information about Army movement.” The Chief Minister also said the initial investigation indicated a possible honey-trap angle, with the accused allegedly being approached through contacts intended to obtain sensitive information.
Police have not said what exact Army information was allegedly passed. How many times the information was shared, what material was sent and who received it on the Pakistani side also remain unclear.
A senior police officer told Hindustan Times that investigators were examining the period and nature of communications with Pakistan-based operatives, but details were being withheld as the investigation was continuing.
“The investigation is on and we cannot reveal more details at this stage.”
The retired Army jawan’s contractual posting and the level of access he had to military information have also not been disclosed. The two accused are expected to be handed over to a central agency for further investigation, according to the Assam government.
