SHILLONG — The North Eastern Council (NEC) completed and closed two major development projects worth ₹14.03 crore in Meghalaya during September, including a school infrastructure project in West Khasi Hills and a cultural complex in Shillong.
The two projects formed part of 14 infrastructure projects worth a combined ₹45.48 crore that the NEC recorded as completed or closed across the Northeast during the month. The council also released ₹42.63 crore for development works during September, with ₹35.21 crore going to the eight Northeastern states and another ₹7.42 crore released to regional institutions and agencies.
In Meghalaya, the larger of the two completed projects was the development of the Cultural Complex of Seng Khasi Ri Raid Laban at Lum Shat Sngi, Kenches Trace, Shillong. The project was completed at a cost of ₹9.28 crore.
The other project involved the construction of school buildings at Mawthadraishan in West Khasi Hills, for which the NEC recorded expenditure of ₹4.75 crore. Together, the two Meghalaya projects account for ₹14.03 crore in completed infrastructure works. Meghalaya also figured among the institutions receiving support under the NEC’s ₹7.42-crore regional allocation. Funds were extended to institutions and agencies including NIT Meghalaya, IIM Shillong, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), NEDFi and NESAC for activities linked to capacity building, infrastructure and technology.
A sizeable part of the regional allocation went towards specialised development programmes. The North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council received ₹2.88 crore for bamboo artisan clusters, while the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation received ₹2.35 crore for handloom skill development. Another ₹1.24 crore went to the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) for STEM laboratories in remote schools.
Among the states, Nagaland received the largest September allocation at ₹11.92 crore, including support for cluster-based coffee value-chain development and a cultural activity complex for the Chakhesang tribe at Pfutseromi village.
Mizoram received ₹6.29 crore for projects covering an auditorium, cultural tourism infrastructure, ginger cultivation, IT-based mineral mapping and community infrastructure. Assam was allocated ₹4.42 crore for student hostels at Bineswar Brahma Engineering College in Kokrajhar and initiatives involving the Singpho community in Tinsukia.
Sikkim received ₹4.17 crore, including support for town CCTV surveillance and a multi-purpose hall at Government Degree College, Rhenock, while Arunachal Pradesh received ₹3.40 crore for projects including a nursing hostel at District Hospital, Yingkiong, the Acheso tourism complex and the Ziro Signature View Point. Tripura and Manipur received instalments for ongoing projects involving tribal livelihoods, eco-tourism, medicinal plants, cultural infrastructure and community development.
The other projects closed during September included three agriculture projects in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong in Assam worth ₹11.55 crore, an IT education programme covering 150 schools in Mizoram, bamboo-processing initiatives, AVGC and IT-ITES training, and programmes involving artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
In Shillong, the completed-project list also included the She-Friendly Programme covering 20 institutions. The September figures put Meghalaya’s two completed projects alongside a wider NEC push covering education, culture, technology, agriculture, tourism and community infrastructure across the region.
