ITANAGAR : The Arunachal Pradesh Cabinet has cleared a new set of eligibility rules for state government recruitment, bringing the existing 80:20 arrangement to an end.

The decision follows recommendations made by a High Power Committee examining who should be eligible for government jobs in the state.

Under the revised system, applicants will have to meet the prescribed requirements relating to an Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) certificate or Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC), depending on the post and eligibility category.

Knowledge of a local dialect or language will also form part of the eligibility conditions. The change is expected to alter how candidates qualify for future state government recruitment.

The 80:20 arrangement had allowed 80 per cent of government posts to be filled through the APST category, while the remaining 20 per cent were kept open for unreserved competition.

The Cabinet decision comes after student and tribal organisations had been pressing the state government to remove the open 20 per cent component.

The All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) had also set August 15 as a deadline for the government to act on the demand.

The revised framework will now shape eligibility for upcoming recruitment to Arunachal Pradesh government posts.
