SHILLONG : Meghalaya celebrated the 12th National Handloom Day on Friday with a programme highlighting the State’s rich weaving traditions and the artisans who continue to preserve its textile heritage.
The event, organised by the Department of Textiles, was attended by Textiles Minister Metbah Lyngdoh as the chief guest. He was welcomed by Principal Secretary Frederick R. Kharkongor, IAS, along with senior government officials and representatives from NIFT Shillong, MIT University of Meghalaya, the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) and other partner institutions.
The programme began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and the inauguration of a handloom exhibition showcasing Meghalaya’s traditional textiles and craftsmanship.
Held under the theme “Weave with Innovation,” the celebration brought together government departments, academic institutions, designers, artisans and industry stakeholders to discuss ways of strengthening the handloom sector through innovation, sustainable practices, design development and better market access.
The Department said the initiative aims to preserve Meghalaya’s traditional weaving heritage while creating new opportunities for artisans by encouraging innovation and expanding the reach of locally woven products.
