SHILLONG : Jio recorded the highest download speeds and the fewest dropped calls in the city during a TRAI network assessment covering parts of Meghalaya, while Airtel led both city and highway routes on upload speeds.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India conducted the Independent Drive Test from March 11 to 16, 2026. The highway section ran from Ratha Cherre Khasia Punjee towards Jowai along NH-6, passing through Ratachera, Rungchera, Umkiang and other locations in the Jaintia Hills.

TRAI released the findings on June 8.

The exercise covered 213 km of city routes, 98.9 km of highway routes, 10 hotspots and a 0.5-km walk test.

Jio recorded an average download speed of 97.89 Mbps on the city routes, ahead of Airtel at 72.24 Mbps, Vi at 25.45 Mbps and BSNL at 9.54 Mbps.

On the highway route, Jio’s average download speed rose to 122.77 Mbps, while Airtel recorded 88.50 Mbps, Vi 23.35 Mbps and BSNL 4.37 Mbps.

Airtel, however, led on uploads. Its average upload speed reached 14.50 Mbps in the city and 20.22 Mbps on the highway, compared with Jio’s 6.21 Mbps and 5.64 Mbps respectively.

Vi recorded upload speeds of 4.81 Mbps in the city and 5.12 Mbps on the highway, while BSNL recorded 3.85 Mbps and 2.31 Mbps.

Jio also recorded the fewest dropped calls in the city test, with 2 dropped calls from 249 successfully established calls. Airtel recorded five from 246, Vi recorded 30 from 216 and BSNL recorded 34 from 164.

On the Ratha Cherre – Jowai highway route, Jio and Airtel recorded three dropped calls each. BSNL recorded six and Vi recorded 10.

Signal measurements also placed Jio and Airtel ahead of Vi and BSNL on the tested city routes.

Jio recorded 3,808 poor-signal samples out of 34,627, while Airtel recorded 5,822 out of 34,747. Vi recorded 13,632 poor-signal samples and BSNL 11,479. On the highway, Airtel recorded 1,997 poor-signal samples from 12,407 measurements and Jio recorded 2,091 from 14,836. Vi recorded 4,946 from 12,887, while BSNL recorded 2,719 from 8,972.

The assessment gives Jio a clear lead on download speed and city call performance, while Airtel has the stronger upload results. Vi and BSNL recorded weaker results across several of the measured parameters.

The findings cover only the routes and locations included in the March drive test.

TRAI said the observations represent network performance on those areas and at the dates and times when testing was conducted, rather than a statewide ranking of every network in Meghalaya.
