Why NEET UG 2026 was cancelled: Paper leak allegations and investigation explained

Lakhs of medical aspirants across India have been left anxious and uncertain after the National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination following allegations of a major paper leak linked to a so-called “guess paper” circulating before the exam.

The decision has triggered nationwide debate over exam security, transparency and the growing pressure on students preparing for one of India’s most competitive entrance tests.

NEET Exam

New Delhi, May 12: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination after serious allegations emerged that portions of the question paper may have been leaked before the test.

The exam, conducted earlier this month for admission into medical colleges across India, was attended by millions of students.

According to reports by national media outlets including The Times of India and India Today, investigators found that a “guess paper” circulating among some students before the examination allegedly matched a significant number of actual NEET questions.

The development raised concerns that the integrity of the exam had been compromised. Following mounting criticism and public pressure, authorities decided to scrap the examination and conduct a fresh test nationwide.

Officials have confirmed that all previous registrations will remain valid and students will not need to apply again for the re-examination. Fresh dates for the new examination are expected to be announced soon.

The controversy reportedly began after suspicious similarities were identified between the leaked material and the original question paper. Investigators are now trying to determine how the material was circulated and whether organised networks were involved.

According to reports, the Centre has also ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter to examine possible criminal involvement behind the alleged leak.

The cancellation has left many students frustrated, especially those who spent months preparing for the examination under intense academic pressure.

“We studied day and night for this exam. Now everything feels uncertain again,” one student wrote on social media after the announcement.

Parents and education experts have also questioned how such a major national-level examination could face repeated allegations related to paper leaks and exam security.

NEET UG remains one of India’s largest entrance examinations and serves as the gateway for admission into MBBS and other undergraduate medical courses across the country.

The latest controversy has once again sparked debate over the credibility of competitive examinations, digital security, coaching networks and the mental stress faced by students during high-stakes entrance tests.

While authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible, many students are now waiting anxiously for clarity on the new examination schedule and further instructions from the NTA.
