Meghalaya is set to introduce a professional degree course in Urban Planning after the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved a new programme at the College of Architecture & Urban Planning in Tura.

Tura : Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday announced that the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted approval to the College of Architecture & Urban Planning, Tura, a constituent college of Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU), to start a Degree Course in Urban Planning from the 2026–2027 academic session.
According to the approval document, the programme has been cleared with an intake capacity of 30 seats.Calling it an important milestone for the state, Sangma said the programme would create opportunities for students in Meghalaya to pursue professional education in urban and regional planning within the state itself.

“This is an important milestone for Meghalaya as it will create opportunities for our youth to pursue professional education in urban and regional planning within the State,” the Chief Minister said.
He added that the initiative is also expected to help build a skilled workforce capable of supporting planned and sustainable development across Meghalaya.
The AICTE approval letter shows that the institution, located at Balalgre in West Garo Hills district, has received permission to conduct the undergraduate programme under Captain Williamson Sangma State University from the 2026–2027 academic year.

The move comes at a time when urban growth, infrastructure expansion and town planning are becoming increasingly important across Meghalaya, particularly in rapidly developing areas.
