Zee wins India TV and streaming rights for FIFA World Cup 2026

MUMBAI : Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd has officially secured the India media rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026, marking one of the company’s biggest moves yet into international sports broadcasting.

The agreement gives Zee television and digital rights for several major FIFA tournaments over the coming years, including the FIFA World Cup 2030 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.

With the deal now confirmed, football fans across India will be able to watch FIFA events on Zee’s upcoming sports television network, Unite8 Sports, while live streaming will be available through the ZEE5 platform.

The acquisition is a significant steps and development in India’s sports media market, where competition for premium football rights has intensified sharply in recent years.

A major push into sports broadcasting

For Zee, the FIFA deal represents far more than a routine sports acquisition. Industry observers and sports analysts see it as a major attempt by the broadcaster to strengthen its position in the rapidly expanding sports entertainment sector. The company has traditionally remained stronger in general entertainment and regional television programming.

However, securing rights for football’s biggest global tournament now places Zee directly into the high-value sports broadcasting market dominated by a handful of major networks.

The FIFA World Cup remains one of the most-watched sporting events globally, attracting billions of viewers across television and digital platforms. The 2026 edition, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is also expected to be historic because it will feature an expanded 48-team format for the first time in tournament history.

That expansion is likely to increase the total number of matches, viewing hours and overall audience engagement worldwide.

What Indian viewers can expect

According to the announcement, FIFA tournaments under the agreement will be broadcast on Unite8 Sports channels and streamed digitally on ZEE5. Industry experts believe the move could significantly strengthen ZEE5’s sports streaming presence in India at a time when digital sports consumption continues growing rapidly among younger audiences.

Football’s popularity has also expanded steadily across India over the past decade, especially during major tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and European Championships.

The availability of both television and digital streaming access is expected to help Zee reach a wider audience across different platforms and regions.

A changing sports media landscape

The FIFA rights deal also signals another shift in India’s highly competitive sports broadcasting industry, where companies are aggressively investing in premium global events to attract subscribers, advertisers and digital audiences.

Over the last few years, major media companies have competed intensely for cricket, football and Olympic rights as sports content increasingly drives digital platform growth.

For Zee, entering the FIFA ecosystem gives the network a strong global sports property capable of attracting both television viewers and streaming users ahead of the next World Cup cycle.

The company is expected to announce further details regarding programming, commentary teams, dedicated sports channels and tournament coverage plans closer to the competition.
