Ri Bhoi, April 14: Former Phulbari MLA Esmatur Mominin on Monday surrendered before police at Nongpoh in Ri Bhoi district after remaining absconding in connection with recent law and order disturbances in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region.

According to police sources, Mominin had been on the run since violence and unrest erupted ahead of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections last month.The controversy dates back to March 9, when Mominin arrived at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Tura to file his nomination for the GHADC polls.

His presence reportedly triggered tensions at the DC office premises, which quickly escalated into a law and order situation.Later the same day, he allegedly delivered an inflammatory speech at Chibinang, further aggravating the situation and leading to unrest in several parts of Garo Hills.

Following these developments, the situation deteriorated significantly, prompting authorities to cancel the GHADC elections due to security concerns.Police officials confirmed that Mominin had been evading arrest since the incidents. He has now surrendered before the police, and further legal proceedings are expected.
