SHILLONG :The United Democratic Party (UDP) has announced that its campaign strategy for the upcoming MP bye-election will be different from the style usually seen during political contests, with the party deciding to avoid mudslinging, personal criticism and character attacks during public meetings.
UDP General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titosstarwell Chyne, said the party has already discussed and agreed internally that its campaign platforms should not be used for insulting opponents or targeting individuals.
“We have already discussed in our meeting that on the campaign stages, we will refrain from personal attacks, pointing fingers and criticizing individuals,” Bah Titos said.
He stated that the UDP wants to project a campaign based on humility and political maturity rather than arrogance or confrontational rhetoric.
“We feel these practices are unpleasant, and as leaders, we should show humility instead of being boastful or proud,” he added.
He also said, the party intends to focus mainly on explaining its own principles, political ideology and agenda before the people rather than spending campaign time attacking rival parties.
He further said the values of “tip briew tip blei” — respecting fellow human beings and God — should also be reflected in political campaigning.

“There should be no room for personal attacks, unnecessary remarks or mockery on election platforms. Based on these principles, we have decided to stick to our own agenda,” he said.
The UDP leader also indicated that the party’s election campaign is expected to formally begin within this week, with the first major public meeting likely to be held in Sohra.
The announcement comes at a time when political campaigning ahead of the MP bye-election is gradually intensifying across Khasi and Jaintia Hills, with parties preparing to mobilise support for the upcoming contest.
