SHILLONG: Public transport in Meghalaya received a boost on Tuesday with the rollout of 55 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma flagged off the new fleet, which includes wheelchair-accessible buses aimed at making public transport more inclusive and convenient for commuters.
The fleet comprises 25 buses with a seating capacity of 27 passengers and 30 buses with a seating capacity of 22 passengers. Officials said the electric buses can travel more than 150 kilometres on a single charge.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiative marks a significant step towards improving public transport services while promoting cleaner modes of travel across the state.
The buses are expected to strengthen urban connectivity and provide residents with an alternative to conventional fuel-powered transport. The inclusion of wheelchair accessibility features is also expected to improve mobility for persons with disabilities.

As part of the project, a dedicated e-bus depot is being developed at Umsawli in New Shillong. The facility will support the operation, maintenance and charging requirements of the new fleet.
The PM e-Bus Sewa scheme is aimed at expanding sustainable public transport systems across the country through the introduction of electric buses and supporting infrastructure.
With the addition of the new fleet, Meghalaya joins a growing number of states adopting electric mobility solutions as part of efforts to reduce emissions and modernise public transport services.
Officials said the initiative is expected to contribute to a cleaner transport network while improving accessibility and connectivity for daily commuters in the years ahead.
