SHILLONG : Courts in North Garo Hills have convicted accused persons in three separate criminal cases, with prison sentences ranging from three months to five years, according to the North Garo Hills Police.
The convictions followed investigations by Meghalaya Police, submission of charge sheets and prosecution before the courts, the police said in a press release issued on Monday.
In the first case, Bajengdoba Police Station Case No. 16(05)2024, registered under Sections 323, 354 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the accused, T.T. Sangma, was convicted by the Judicial Magistrate First Class, North Garo Hills, Mendipathar.
The judgment was delivered on August 13, 2026.
Sangma was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 354 IPC, one year of simple imprisonment under Section 323 and another year under Section 506. The sentences will run consecutively, resulting in a total of five years’ imprisonment.
The court also imposed an additional nine months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment of the fine.
In another case, Kharkutta Police Station Case No. 10(08)2023, registered under Section 420 IPC, Ramu Ch. Marak was convicted by the same court on August 14.
Marak was sentenced to three years of simple imprisonment and fined ₹10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in a further nine months of simple imprisonment.
The third conviction relates to Bajengdoba Police Station Case No. 03(01)2024, registered under Sections 447, 427, 506 and 34 IPC.
The accused was sentenced to three months of simple imprisonment under Section 447 and two years of simple imprisonment under Section 427, along with a ₹10,000 fine.
The sentences will run consecutively, resulting in two years and three months of imprisonment. An additional six months of simple imprisonment will apply in default of payment of the fine.
North Garo Hills Police said the convictions were secured through investigations, collection of evidence and prosecution before the courts.
Superintendent of Police Ishan Gupta, IPS, said Meghalaya Police would continue to focus on professional investigation, effective prosecution and adherence to the rule of law, while ensuring that victims receive justice and offenders are brought to account.
