SHILLONG : The East Jaintia Hills district administration has prohibited bull fights and other animal fights across the district, citing animal welfare laws and a Supreme Court ruling.
District Magistrate Manish Kumar, IAS, issued the order on August 24 under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
The administration has noted the holding of bull fights and animal fights in parts of East Jaintia Hills, particularly during fetes and other festivals.
Such activities are prohibited under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. The order also cites the Supreme Court’s 2014 judgment against bull fighting.
The prohibition covers the entire East Jaintia Hills district, meaning bull fights and animal fights cannot be organised as part of festivals, fairs or other events.
Any violation will invite action under the applicable legal provisions. The order was passed ex parte and took immediate effect on August 24. It will remain in force until further orders.
The district administration said the restrictions were necessary to prevent activities that violate animal cruelty laws.
