HITO seeks inquiry into Assam border blockade, Army personnel incident

HITO urges Centre to act on Meghalaya-Assam border tensions

SHILLONG : The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has sought immediate intervention from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs over continuing tensions along the Meghalaya-Assam border, including road blockades and alleged obstruction of movement.

In a representation submitted to Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on Monday, HITO raised concerns over repeated disruptions on interstate routes and their implications for public safety and movement. The organisation also alleged that Indian Army personnel travelling in a civilian vehicle were stopped on a National Highway during one such incident.

According to HITO, the personnel identified themselves but were still made to remain on the road and allegedly faced misbehaviour and confrontation. The organisation said it had enclosed video material of the incident with its representation for examination by the authorities.

HITO has sought an impartial and time-bound inquiry into the alleged obstruction and the incident involving the Army personnel. It urged the Home Ministry to examine the footage and take appropriate action if any wrongdoing is established.

The organisation also called for closer coordination between the Assam and Meghalaya governments to prevent groups or individuals from obstructing interstate movement. It proposed a formal coordination mechanism involving the Ministry of Home Affairs and both state governments for faster sharing of information and a coordinated response to potential flashpoints along the border.

HITO further urged authorities to keep the National Highway and other important routes free from unlawful blockades, particularly when disruptions affect ordinary commuters, emergency services or security personnel.

The organisation cited a similar blockade threat in December 2024 involving the Kutumba Suraksha Parishad, saying authorities had intervened after it approached the Assam Chief Secretary.

HITO said its latest representation was aimed at ensuring that interstate disputes are handled through constitutional mechanisms, dialogue and due process. It warned that repeated incidents without timely intervention could fuel retaliation and deepen tensions along the border.
