SHILLONG : The Pastors’ Fellowship of the Church of God, Meghalaya & Assam, has sought a State Holiday on November 1, the death anniversary of Rev. J.J.M. Nichols-Roy.
A delegation of the Fellowship met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday and submitted a representation seeking official recognition of the day.
Speaking to the Press after the meeting, General Secretary Rev. Dr. S.K. Syiemlieh said the demand was to recognise Nichols-Roy’s contributions to Meghalaya and the Northeast, particularly in tribal welfare, constitutional development, religious freedom and social service.
The Fellowship described Nichols-Roy as a statesman, constitutional architect, church pioneer and champion of tribal rights, saying his work played an important role in shaping Meghalaya’s social, political and constitutional foundations.
“Declaring November 1 as a State Holiday would honour his legacy and remind future generations of his contribution to our constitutional history and democratic values,” Syiemlieh said.
He said the Government would examine the request.
The Fellowship also pointed to Nichols-Roy’s role in promoting tribal economic development and said the Church of God’s 125th anniversary in February 2027 would be another occasion to remember his contribution.
