SHILLONG: Meghalaya has recorded its highest pass percentage in the Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) since the examination was introduced in 2019, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said.
Congratulating the successful candidates of MTET 2026, Sangma said the improvement was particularly encouraging for both in-service teachers and those seeking to enter the teaching profession.
For Paper I, covering Classes I to V, the pass percentage rose from 63.15% in 2025 to 84.30% this year. Paper II, for Classes VI to VIII, also recorded a sharp increase from 64.43% to 85.32%.
Sangma attributed the achievement to the efforts of teachers and aspiring teachers and congratulated the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT) and the Education Department for conducting the examination.
He said the examination was conducted in a “fair, transparent, orderly and credible manner” while maintaining the required standards of integrity.
For in-service teachers who did not qualify this year, Sangma said there would be three more opportunities to clear the MTET before the Supreme Court’s August 2028 deadline.
He urged them to use the opportunities to continue their preparation.
“Our teachers are the foundation of the future of Meghalaya,” Sangma said, stressing the need for a professionally trained and competent teaching workforce to improve learning outcomes.
