SHILLONG — A video carrying the faces of East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong is circulating on social media. The police now want to find out what exactly is behind it.
Syiem said police will examine the video, which he described as a deepfake, before deciding whether any legal action should follow.
The SP said the spread of AI-generated videos and fabricated content has made such material increasingly common on social media. But this particular video, he made clear, does not represent any official position of the East Khasi Hills Police or any authorised police action.
He said the police would first examine the content and its authenticity before deciding on the next step.
The video has appeared at a particularly sensitive moment, with the police department already facing allegations involving personnel and alleged illegal collections from trucks.
The video remains under examination, with the police looking at the content before deciding what action, if any, is warranted.
