SHILLONG — The Khasi Students’ Union has taken its campaign against alleged police extortion to the gates of the Meghalaya Secretariat and the East Khasi Hills SP Office, putting up a series of sharp banners targeting Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and SP Vivek Syiem.
One banner carries the lines “Vivek Vivek / Yes Prestone / Extorting money / Yes Prestone / Where’s my share / Here! Here! Here!”
Another directly calls for action against the police, reading “Arrest corrupt police officials / Prosecute corrupt police officials.”
The KSU also questioned Vivek Syiem over the handling of the alleged extortion sites, asking in Khasi whether the SP had the authority to order the dismantling of structures at a crime scene before the inquiry was completed.
Another banner asks Syiem to take responsibility and questions why he appeared to act only after the KSU brought the alleged collections into the open.
The union has also demanded that Syiem step down as East Khasi Hills SP to allow what it describes as an independent and unhindered investigation.
The banners come amid allegations of money being collected from truckers at police checkpoints, which have triggered demands for action against personnel allegedly involved.
The KSU’s message is now hanging in plain sight outside government offices: arrest and prosecute those responsible, and do not shield anyone because of their position.
