SHILLONG – A road project meant to improve Shillong’s connectivity is facing a local drainage problem at Langkyrding Minghi, where recurring flooding and waterlogging have been blamed on construction material entering a natural stream.
Pynthorumkhrah MLA and senior BJP leader AL Hek has urged the government to act, saying sand, soil and debris from the ongoing Shillong Bypass construction are being washed into the stream during rainfall. Hek said he had written to the Chief Engineer of PWD (Roads), forwarding a representation from the Dorbar Shnong of Langkyrding Minghi. He has also informed Deputy Chief Minister Preston Tynsong, who handles PWD, and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who handles Urban Affairs.
The Dorbar Shnong said the deposited construction material has choked the stream and reduced its ability to carry rainwater. During heavy rainfall, muddy water, sand and debris then spill into nearby residential areas.
Hek has asked the authorities and the executing agency to inspect the affected stretch, clear the material and restore the natural flow of the stream.
He also called for proper silt-control and containment measures at the construction site to prevent more construction debris from reaching the watercourse. The MLA urged the government to ensure that the bypass work does not obstruct or alter the locality’s natural drainage system.
With the monsoon still active, Hek said corrective measures should be taken before another spell of heavy rain puts residents and their properties at greater risk.
