SHILLONG – More than half of India’s Gen Z workers and nearly half of millennials say financial pressure has made them delay major life decisions, according to Deloitte’s 2026 Gen Z and Millennial Survey, putting money firmly in the middle of choices once treated as ordinary milestones of adulthood.
The survey found that 54% of Indian Gen Z respondents and 44% of millennials had delayed major life decisions because of their financial situation. The India survey covered 806 respondents, including 506 Gen Zs and 300 millennials, and was conducted between November 2025 and January 2026.
Housing is another major pressure. More than 60% of both Indian Gen Zs and millennials said housing affordability affects their career decisions. Thirty-seven per cent of Gen Z respondents said they could not afford a home, compared with 20% of millennials.
Financial insecurity is also more pronounced among younger respondents. Twenty-nine per cent of Gen Z respondents reported feeling financially insecure, compared with 18% of millennials.
Employment remains another concern. Unemployment was the leading concern for 27% of Gen Z respondents and 34% of millennials in India.
The figures come alongside strong career ambitions, but the survey shows that financial stability and personal wellbeing are influencing how those ambitions are pursued.
Almost all respondents expressed interest in eventually reaching senior leadership, with 96% of Gen Zs and 93% of millennials saying they were interested in senior leadership roles. But only 9% and 8% respectively identified leadership as their primary career goal. Work-life balance and financial independence were among the priorities shaping their choices.
The numbers put a different face on the usual story about young people postponing adulthood. Buying a home, changing careers, starting a family or taking a major financial step increasingly has to compete with housing costs, job security and the simple question of whether the money is there.
For young Indians, adulthood has not disappeared. It has acquired a price tag.
