AIZAWL – Mizoram Judicial Service officer Helen Dawngliani has been appointed an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court, becoming the second Mizo woman to serve on the High Court bench.
The appointment was notified by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on September 8, 2026, following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium on August 18. Her appointment is for two years under Article 224(1) of the Constitution, effective from the date she assumes office.
Dawngliani joined the Mizoram Judicial Service on May 24, 2011. She has served as Additional District and Sessions Judge in Aizawl and Lunglei and is currently District and Sessions Judge, Aizawl. Her career has also included senior judicial and government assignments. She served as Registrar of the Gauhati High Court and later as Secretary of Mizoram’s Law and Judicial Department from April 2021 to July 2024.
Before moving through the judicial administration, Dawngliani also served as Government Advocate-cum-Additional Public Prosecutor at the Gauhati High Court’s Aizawl Bench.
Her appointment follows the retirement of Justice Marli Vankung, who became the first Mizo woman to serve as a judge of the Gauhati High Court. Vankung retired from the bench on March 3, 2026.
Dawngliani will be the fifth judge from Mizoram to serve on the Gauhati High Court. Before her, judges from the state included T. Vaiphei, Michael Zothankhuma, Nelson Sailo and Marli Vankung.
The same September 8 notification also appointed Nchumbemo Mozhui, an advocate from Nagaland, as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court for two years.
Dawngliani’s elevation brings her career across Mizoram’s district judiciary, government legal administration and the Gauhati High Court to the bench.
