SHILLONG : Former Rajya Sabha MP Dr W.R. Kharlukhi has resigned from the primary membership of the National People’s Party (NPP) with immediate effect.
Kharlukhi submitted his resignation in a letter dated ( August 24 2026) to NPP Meghalaya state president Prestone Tynsong.
In the letter, Kharlukhi thanked the party leadership and fellow members for the opportunities, support and experiences during his association with the NPP.
He requested Tynsong to accept his resignation and remove his name from the party’s primary membership records with immediate effect.
The resignation marks Kharlukhi’s formal exit from the NPP after a long association with the party. He had earlier served as president of the NPP’s Meghalaya unit and represented the state in the Rajya Sabha.
Kharlukhi stepped down as Meghalaya NPP president in 2023 after serving in the position for several years. Prestone Tynsong subsequently took over as the party’s state president.
Kharlukhi’s Rajya Sabha term also ended in July 2026, after which the NPP-backed James P.K. Sangma was elected to represent Meghalaya in the Upper House.
However, Kharlukhi has only announced his withdrawal from the NPP, without giving a public explanation for the decision.
