SHILLONG — 15-kg ovarian tumour was successfully removed from a 45-year-old woman at Williamnagar Civil Hospital on September 8, marking the first major surgery of its kind at the hospital.
The patient had suffered abdominal pain and distension for around five years and also had a cardiac condition, making the surgery high-risk.
The procedure was performed under epidural anaesthesia and led by senior gynaecologist Dr Vince Momin and anaesthetist Dr Sengrak Marak, with support from medicine specialist Dr Tanmoy Momin, nursing staff and the operation theatre team.
The tumour was successfully removed and the patient is stable and recovering well.
The medical team also included staff nurses Eulin, Eugine and Dinea and OT technician Trinchi.
The operation is notable for both the size of the tumour and the patient’s underlying cardiac condition. It was completed at Williamnagar Civil Hospital, without the patient having to travel elsewhere for the major procedure.
